Home Simplified: In the Master Bedroom

Don't we all have a dream of our Master Bedroom being a calm, retreat like space where we go to relax, recharge and find peace?  Ya....I have that dream, too.

I do believe through design, we can create spaces in our homes that we long to be in.  I personally love cool colors, soft textures and timeless patterns to bring peace into my spaces.  Our home is very lived in...every room is used to the max...but that doesn't mean I have to curb all my hopes for each room to be comfortable, organized and loved.
Our Master Bedroom...in the past...had been a closed door room if you will.  No one really went in it.  It was only for sleeping and putting all the laundry in when I didn't want to actually put it away (please, tell me I am not the only one).  It was the last room on the list to clean, to decorate and to really care about.  After a day of cleaning the rest of the house, our master bedroom quickly became unimportant because I was too tired and it was never seen anyway.  This is the case no longer.
I knew when we moved that our room needed to fill many roles.  It needed to be quite functional.  It needed to be a place to get away and close the door.  It needed to be a place to have quiet (as much as you can in way in a 900sq ft house).  It needed to be a place that we could relax in but also a place that the kids could play.  Our room has served our family well.  For us, I feel that it is peaceful...it is the room we all got to to shut the door and breathe for a moment.  I truly love our room.  It is simple but used and loved.  Also...every inch is used to store....but you wouldn't know it because that is what good organization and design does...it hides well!
Our Master Closet is small to say the least...its depth can't even fit a standard hanger.  We opted into wardrobes for our closets instead.  We love the PAX systems from IKEA and they have been just the amount of space we needed for our things.  I am not a clothes or shoes person...so it is great for me but might not be for others.
Like I said, our room needed to fill many needs and one was where I get ready.  Our bathroom is tight and there is only one.  Getting ready in the bathroom is not an option, so I set up a space in our room for me to get ready.  It has worked beautifully!

Some other tips and they really can apply to every space....

*Create spaces that you love....you will use them more often and want to spend more time in them.  What is the point of having spaces in your home that you don't use?

*Function does not mean you have to skimp on style.  Good design serves both purposes.

*In small spaces, get creative with how to store...or purge and then you don't have to store as much.

*I declutter our master bedroom often because I want it to stay calm and peaceful for our family.  Visual chaos gets in the way of peace.

*We do not have a TV in our room (great advice from my mom when I got married was to never have a TV in your master) as you might see...this helps to keep this room quiet and I love it for that reason!

*The color white helps to make a room seem larger and cleaner...kids don't help this cause but I still love white!

Thanks for joining me on this tour!  Come back next week...we will be taking a look at closets!

And my kids didn't want to be left out....so we had a little photo shoot on my bed....
