My Closet....

Decisions, decisions.  It can be easy to make decisions for someone else on what is worth saving and what is worth getting rid of, but when it comes to our own items...it takes a little more effort.

Let's talk about our closets.

Clothes.  We need them...that is for sure.  So how do we purge our closets when they have gotten out of control?  Here are a couple thoughts I have when it come to closets and they are very random.  Note:  I am not a big clothes person and I don't enjoy shopping but....here we go.

At the end of each season, I take a look at the items in my closet.
Are there any items THIS past season I did not wear?
Are there any items that are on their last leg (faded, a hole in it, pilling, pit stains...) from this specific season?

If you did not wear something in a season, there are multiple reasons why.  It might not fit anymore, too big or too small.  It might not be in style anymore.  Or, let's be honest....you just don't like it.  Any of these things can lead you to donate or consign an item in your closet.  You did not reach for it for 4-5 months straight.  You probably will not reach for it again.  In this case, be really honest with yourself.

I have heard this trick if you struggle with this concept.  Turn all your hangers one direction and after wearing something, turn the hanger around.  At the end of the season, if you have any hangers that have not been turned, get rid of those clothes.  I have never had to go this route, but it could be helpful!

For shoes, it is the same deal.  Did I touch those boots this winter?  Those shoes that hurt my feet every time I wear them, should I keep them even though they were expensive?  My mantra is...if I did not wear it in a season, I probably won't again.

If you are in between size, I would pack up the items that don't fit at the moment.  This goes for maternity clothing, as well.  Pack them up and label the bins well.  If you are still not in that size within the year, I would donate or consign.  Either way...if you are not wearing it currently, not having it in your closet will make decision making easier on a day to day basis.  If you get back to the size of the clothing you boxed up (or are now pregnant)....it is like Christmas morning opening that box again.

I personally keep all my clothes out for each season.  In Georgia, it could be 50 in the morning and 90 in the afternoon, so you just never know!  I don't have many clothes but all the clothes I have I LOVE and I bought purposefully to use for many years...a capsule wardrobe, if you will.  My clothing pieces are simple and timeless, with a couple POP pieces, and go with everything.  I mix and match things and wear for multiple seasons with the addition of a cardigan.  If I no longer LOVE a piece...it goes.  That simple.  I also am very boring...this is not every one's personality which I totally understand!

If I add something to my closet, I usually get rid of something.  If I replace a key piece like a white cami or a pair of worn out jeans, I trade one for the other.  Often times, we need to replace a very used item but never get rid of the very used item.  This adds to the clutter of your closet or drawers.

If a clothing item is sentimental to you but you no longer wear it, find a safe place for it...but don't keep it in your closet.  Space is valuable!

Why do I keep a minimal, organized closet full of only items that I actually love and wear, you ask?  Because it saves me time and energy....that I can then spend on other things that actually matter to me.

I think that is all I have to say about that.  It is hard for me to give advice in this area because I am just not a clothes person. HA

Do you have any great advice to share in this area?  Comment!
