Tip #12 Don't ever purge when children are around
This should be a no brainer....or you might be thinking that I am one mean mom.
A huge goal of mine as a Mom is that my children don't focus so much on stuff but care more about spending time together or using their imagination. My kids are still young and I am very much still in charge of their spaces and things. I don't ask their permission...who’s the parent...but I am respectful, for sure.
My boys are definitely more carefree than my daughter. Zoe is a lover of all things...she would keep every notebook, toy, box (like amazon boxes), paper, sticker, Chick-fil-a toy if I let her. And for a long time, especially in our old home, she kept everything and I would go into her room and be floored by how much stuff she had everywhere.
As Zoe gets older, I am including her in on more of the purging process that I do every week. I encourage her to think through the items she has in her loft...what's important, what is worth keeping, what is trash or not necessary at this time. If there is something she really wants to keep and she gives me a great reason...she can keep it. But if her reason is because she wants her daughter to see this drawing of her and her cat (that doesn't exist)...we say peace out and off it goes in the trash.
When you have less space, every square foot matters. I don't want our spaces filled with STUFF. When you have more space, you fill them...that is reality. Fight it. And don't purge when your kids are around. You are welcome.
